Targeting your customer is very important. On many CPA (cost per action) accounts that you can get set up with online they have a special targeting feature. You let the ad run for about $300-500 and over the course of a week, stats are returned back to you and you can see if people are converting or not. Nearly all these kinds of websites have some kind of tracking code for you to check to see how well your traffic is converting. What you really want to do is not pay for the traffic but to get these companies on your side as your affiliate. This is where you pay them on a per sale basis. It's only going work if you have your ducks in a row and can show these people that your product can sell with the traffic that is being given to you. There is a lot of fraud in this type of business where 15-20% of the orders are fake. You have these people from Russia or India buying up your product getting the commission check then returning the product for a refund. When you on the big networks, stuff like that doesn't happen. Your ads however are a lot harder to accept, but that's ok. I had this happen to me on a big ISP provider years back. The banner advertising spot cost anywhere between $10,000 to $20,000 and I told them that I wasn't willing to pay that and I wanted a cost per sale agreement. They agreed and for months I had my banner running at the top of their home page. If I look back and my internet marketing history, it is interesting to see just how I would do something if I started my business from scratch. This is an extremely value exercise that you can do for yourself. I do a lot of testing to see how and which products perform the best. So I recommend doing split testing if you can find some software to help you out with this. You can do a search online and find many programs that would help you out in this area. I find that many people don't understand the realm of targeting traffic and how specialized you can get down to. Many people target their niches way to tight. When they thought they had only 8,000 searches and 4 people competing against, then they try out paid media and get blown wide open. With SEO you have a 5 part process, getting into the search engines, getting on the first page, getting people to click on your offer, getting people to opt in to a mailing list, then getting people to buy. When you dealing with driving traffic with a paid media account, you cut out some of those steps and can have great success.
