Dofollow vs Nofollow Backlinks

Dofollow vs Nofollow Backlinks

Dofollow vs Nofollow Backlinks: What is the Difference between Dofollow and Nofollow Links and When and Where You Should be using Them!

Author: Shawn Stoik

Anyone who is using online marketing and search engine optimization techniques to promote their business should know about backlinking by now. And with the recent Google Slap we're all hearing about, there has been extra mention lately about the importance of using Backlinks and the difference of dofollow vs nofollow links especially!

So, What Exactly are "Dofollow" and "Nofollow" Links, Anyways? Dofollow vs Nofollow Backlinks:

You probably already know by now, that when it comes to online marketing and effective search engine optimization, getting backlinks to your website and/or blog is a hugely important way to improve your ranking in the Search Engines. Those links that direct and point back to your sites are known as "backlinks" and they can come from other blogs, articles, forums and Social Media. So, breaking it down even further.... there are actually 2 types of Backlinks and they will be either "Dofollow" links or "Nofollow" links.

So, what's the difference? Dofollow vs Nofollow Backlinks:

  • A "Dofollow" Link is a hyperlink that is able to tell search engines to pass along it's page rank influence to an outbound link.
  • A "Nofollow" Link is exactly the opposite. It is a hyperlink that removes the ability to pass on it's page rank status to other sites.

How do "Dofollow" and "Nofollow" Links Work?

When a Google Spyder bot visits and sweeps through a webpage to read it and search for content, it will include and pay attention to any links with a "dofollow" attribute and exclude any links with a "nofollow" attribute.

When they search and come across a site with a nofollow link, they will see it but not respond and go to visit where that link is directing, but when they come across a dofollow link, they will respond and follow that link to wherever it is directing. AND if the google spyder bots like what they see on the next page, that page will be ranked even better and higher on google!

What does this mean for You? Why you NEED Backlinks for SEO:

If high "quality" sites (according to Google), provide backlinks to your site, Google will reward you for that and improve your rank in the search results! So the more backlinks (especially the dofollow links) to your pages/sites, the better and higher you will rank on Google and the other search engines!

  • To do this: Leave comments and responses on other blogs and forums, which will allow you to include your website/blog hyperlinks with a "dofollow" attribute.

Where to Place Nofollow or Dofollow Backlinks:

In order to gain better search engine status and page rank, you should aim to post on authoritative, high traffic sites that are updated frequently. The search engines will also be looking for backlinks that are related. Meaning that the site you are linking to will have similar content to the site you are adding your backlink to.

So, remember that when adding either nofollow or dofollow backlinks your goal should be to have as many quality and related backlinks to your sites as possible to help improve your search engine rankings and your authority status on Google! You want to show that your website and/or blog is an important one that many different sites are linking back to and also showcasing as being important and worth sharing and visiting!
