Press releases can build traffic to your website overnight. An important part of the press release process is to become familiar with the various types of media outlets. Why? You need to know the deadlines for submission, and honor those deadlines.

You also need to familiarize yourself with the media outlets so that you can strategically place your release where your story is most likely to generate interest or attention.

For monthly magazines, submit your releases no later than two months ahead of time, as monthly magazines usually close their editorial content about two months in advance of the issue date. Stories should be sent enough in advance to allow the reporter ample time for coverage.

For radio, television, or electronic placement, submit your release knowing that the turnaround is immediate. These journalists/reporters typically run short stories based on breaking news, so be prepared to give an interview.

For daily newspapers, general assignment reporters turn around stories within 24-48 hours; if your story falls into this category, be prepared for an interview or at least for immediate contact.

For feature articles (print, broadcast, or online), submit your releases one month prior to publication. Feature writers work on stories weeks in advance of publication date. Again, make sure that you allow the reporter/journalist plenty of time to cover your story.

Finally, make sure that you have the correct contact name and e-mail address of the person who handles stories related to your business. Press releases sent to the wrong contact person are often deleted or thrown away.
