PPC or pay per click advertising began on the Internet in the late 1990's, but due to the prevalence of click fraud, many advertisers dropped it because it was not very effective in the early days. Flash forward to 2000 when Google launched its AdWords PPC service. In 2005, ask.com started their PPC ad service, Yahoo! debuted the Yahoo! Publisher Network, and in 2006 msn.com offered the Microsoft Ad Center.

In the autumn of 2010 Yahoo! and MSN/Bing combined and now the Microsoft Ad Center delivers PPC advertising on both Yahoo! and Bing at the same time.

Google has dominated the PPC advertising world since mid-2003, and given the reality that they are the number one search engine on the Internet, they control a mass of traffic online. But not all of it, and that's what we want to talk about in this article. Facebook has been nipping at Google's heels and is beginning to gain on Google as the most visited website on the Internet. Let's take a look at the two top players in the PPC advertising space right now other than Google AdWords: Yahoo!/MSN and Facebook Ads.

With the consolidation of Yahoo! and MSN, advertisers can now have their ads show up on both search engines concurrently. Microsoft Ad Center often has a smaller price per click for certain keywords, so it's certainly worth investigating as an alternative PPC ad platform.

Setting up your ads and ad groups can be a bit more cumbersome on the Microsoft ad platform, but again, you are getting exposure on two serious search engines with a lone campaign. The traffic on these two combined search engines is still not as plentiful as on Google, but you are not paying as much, and because it is PPC, you only pay for the clicks you really get.

With over 500 million users, over 50% of which log into their accounts daily, Facebook is no longer to be excluded as a way to get in front of your target audience. Facebook PPC is still very young, but it is very rapidly winning in popularity. Facebook PPC allows advertisers to get very special when it comes to reaching their target audience. You can pick statistical information about your target audience such as their age, gender, location, education level, and interests.

Facebook is not a search engine and their ads have a tendency to have a smaller CTR in some instances than on Google, but you get a larger opportunity to be seen by your particular target audience.

PPC is not an area where you want to dip your toe in and then move on. In order to see some progressive results you must become a student of this effective system of assured traffic generation. Read books on the subject matter, take a course, and keep testing and tracking your campaigns until you hit your stride and get some great results.
